Città delle Cernie, known in French as Mérouville, is the most famous shoal around Lavezzi. The prohibition of spearfishing within the Lavezzi Marine Park, together with the once widespread but questionable practice of feeding groupers, allowed these fish to thrive undisturbed. Their behaviour has been strongly influenced by years of interaction with divers, and large dusky groupers now frequently follow visitors throughout the dive. The shoal is also rich in brown meagre and schools of dentex that hunt among the smaller fish. A small rock north of the main shoal is particularly noteworthy: its healthy red gorgonians provide excellent opportunities for underwater photography.
